As part of my Professional Experience module, which I will be completing as part of the second semester of my second year, I have the opportunity to work within the Faculty of Business and Law (BAL), at the University of Portsmouth and aid in redesigning and renovating their cafe and social space.
"The Hub" as it as known as, used to have a wall directly down the centre of the space to separate the area between staff and students, each with their own seating area, entry and access to the cafe counter. This wall was taken down a few years ago, to end the segregation between staff and students, and give more space to students, who, evidently, use the space more. However, now that this wall has been removed, both staff and students feel as if they are invading each other's space.
A team of 9 interior architecture, and architecture students have volunteered to help the engagement forum (which is the team of lecturers at the faculty BAL that receive feedback from students and act accordingly), the catering service and other in redeveloping a cohesive space.
